El Gato y Mictlantecuhtli
Estaba Mictlantecuhtli sentado en su trono, aburrido y abrumado de sus deberes diarios, entonces decidió hacer un viaje, atravesó lo 9 niveles del Mictlán y al entrar a Tlaltícpac (la tierra) lo primero que encontró fue un pequeño gato negro caminando en el fondo de la milpa, perdiéndose entre las sombras, donde lo único que brillaba eran su ojos de un amarillo profundo. Al percatarse de la presencia de Mictlantecuhtli, el gato se acercó, camino alrededor de él, se restregó en su frías y huesudas piernas y le ronroneó. Mictlantecuhtli asombrado que el gato no tuviera una pizca de temor, lo tomó y recostó en su brazo, lo apapachó y admiró durante algunos minutos y antes de continuar su viaje se despidió de él con la certeza de que algún día en algún otro lugar se volverían a encontrar.
¿Sabías que?... en el México antiguo y en toda América no había gatos domésticos, sus familiares más cercanos son felinos de mayor tamaño como Jaguares, Pumas, Linces, entre otros. Los registros más antiguos del gato doméstico son en Egipto.
The cat and Mictlantecuhtli
Mictlantecuhtli was sitting in his throne, bored and overwhelmed by his daily duties, he then decided to make a trip, he went through Mictlán nine levels and when he got in Tlaticpac (The earth plane) the first thing he found was a little black cat walking in the back of the cornfield, getting lost in the shadows where the only thing shining was his deep yellow eyes. When he noticed Mictlantecuhtli presence, the cat got close, walked around him, it rubbed himself on his cold, bony legs and purred. Mictlantecuhtli, amazed by the lack of fear the cat showed, carried him and laid him in his arm, he cuddled it and admired it for a few minutes and before continuing his journey he said goodbye to it with the certainty that one day, in some other place, they would meet again.
Did you know? In ancient Mexico and the rest of America, there were no domesticated cats, their closest relatives are bigger felines such as Jaguars, Pumas, Lynxes among others. The oldest records of domesticated cats come from Egypt.
